Stem cell
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells obtained from the bone marrow of the horse. This means they have the potential to become any cell when placed in the correct environment. These cells are obtained from bone marrow in the sternum of the horse under standing sedation. Once these cells have been obtained they are forwarded to a laboratory for culture. In the majority of cases approximately 10 million cells are grown before they are inserted into a lesion. Harvesting and insertion must all be completed in a sterile environment and should ideally be done in a hospital facility. Following injection of the stem cells into a lesion within a ligament or tendon the horse undergoes an extended rehabilitation programme. For further information please click the link below.
