IRAP
What is IRAP?
IRAP (Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein) is a novel technology being used at our clinic as an additional therapy to combat osteoarthritis in your horse. By harnessing the regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties of your horses own blood cells, IRAP has the potential to stop the cartilage matrix from being degraded and increase healing. It also acts to stop the inflammation cycle within the joint to bring comfort to your horse.
The procedure begins with drawing blood from your horse into a special IRAP syringe containing glass beads. The blood is then incubated in our IRAP machine and centrifuged to separate the serum and blood cells. The serum is then injected back into your horse’s joints at the site(s) of injury or disease.
IRAP offers an exciting addition to our range of therapies for treating lameness. It is a drug free and leaves no residues, therefore, since no prohibited substance is administered, there is no withdrawal period for competition.
